From Bad to Worse

After Gordon’s chauffeur drove me straight back home (Gordon didn’t argue—he had to be up at five A.M. for the next day’s shoot), I tried Ned on his cell. No luck. Either he had it turned off, or he wasn’t taking my calls.

This was a disaster of the first order. If Dierdre got to Ned before I did, he might break up with me before I even got a chance to explain. And I was ready to explain everything to him—including my investigation of the threats. Unlike Bess, Ned could keep a secret if I asked him to. But how could I explain if he wouldn’t take my calls?

It was late, and there was that early call time tomorrow, so I was just about ready to turn in, but there was one more phone call I wanted to make first.

“Sidney? This is Nancy Drew. Remember me?”

“Hello, kitten. Got some good dish for me?”

“Uh, well, yes, actually.” If I wanted to ask a favor of him—and I did—I had to do something for him first, and I knew it. That’s the way people like Sidney work. “Fiona and Brett had a fight today.”

“Oh, really! Do tell . . .”

Ugh. His tone was so sleazy it made me shiver with disgust.

“Some jealousy thing. That’s all I know right now, but I’ll try to get more.”

“Well, it’s a start,” he said. “And now? Presumably, there’s something you want from me, too, or you wouldn’t have called. Am I right?”

“Yes,” I admitted. “There is something. Um, if you happen to hear any rumors . . . romantic rumors, about me and Gordon MacIntyre . . .”

“You and Gordon MacIntyre?!”

“Or me and Brett Harley . . .”

“Or you and Brett?!”

“Just . . . don’t print them, okay? Because I can tell you for sure, there’s no truth to them—none whatsoever.”

“Uh-huh . . . right. You know, Nancy, I’ve been around long enough to know that where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.”

“Well, not this time,” I said.

“Nancy?”

“Yeah?”

“I can hear you blushing right through the phone line.”

“Sidney—please?”

He sighed. “All right. But you owe me one, kid. A big one.”
